“FLA to take tough stance against Licensed Firearm Holders involved in Domestic Abuse”
As the regulatory body mandated to govern private firearm ownership in Jamaica, the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) takes keen note of the number of reports and incidents of domestic abuse involving licensed firearm holders recently. The Authority intends to deal decisively and swiftly with these incidents of abuse and will be taking a zero tolerance approach.
Additionally, the FLA will be writing to the Chief Justice to request a partnership with the Family Court in order to receive reports on any case before the Court under the Domestic Violence Act involving licensed firearm holders.
It is of utmost importance that owners of firearm licences remain fit and proper individuals, displaying a certain level of responsibility at all times while carrying a licensed firearm. The Authority is therefore urging all citizens, family members and friends of licensed firearm holders who witness any case of domestic abuse and/or see any signs of emotional instability in licensed firearm holders, to report these concerns to the FLA immediately.
All reports made to the Authority are treated as highly confidential and therefore any information given will not be disclosed.
We continue to remind licence holders that owning a firearm in Jamaica is not a right but a privilege and therefore full compliance with the Firearms Act, and adherence to the policies and procedures of the FLA are essential to the continuance of firearm ownership.
